Silent Films 101
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 роки тому
Tampa Theatre is one of the only venues in the country where you can still see a silent film as it was originally meant to be seen: in a 1920s movie palace, on the big screen, with a live musician providing the accompaniment. Put aside any preconceived notions and learn what that experience is *really* like with Artist-in-Residence Steven Ball: It is the closest thing to time travel you will ev...

On Friday, May 22 - in the midst of the COVID-19 shutdown - the historic Tampa Theatre welcomed acclaimed organist Dr. Steven Ball to play to an empty auditorium. The result was a first for the majestic movie palace: a live-streamed performance of Buster Keaton's 1926 classic "The General" and post-show Q&A for our friends and fans.

I saw it there at that Theater MANY times! And now that I live elsewhere, if it's playing there at Tampa Theatre when I'm visiting, I try to go catch it still once again!
Brilliant Theme 🙂
Where can I get this film?
That’s what I wanna know
from glorious pie... t martyrdom 🍻
I was interested until Billy Bragg started talking
ohhh poor lad...
Something tells me they'll survive without you.
boff... just a name 🥴
Some folks are emotionally equipped for a life as a pro musician , others just want to have a bit of fun and not get too tied up in it all ... I know a guy that plays the drums and was offered a gig with the Rolling Stones before Charlie Watts ... He turned them down . Many years later he played in a New Wave-y kind of band that had a semi hit with a cover of a 60s hit by a female icon ... He left when they were touring Australia , the band split but the singer and guitarist went back to the UK , put another band together that became mega huge ... He and his lovely wife lived in Sydney for an age , then moved to the Gold Coast where he became a swimming coach , and , to quote him ' Happy as f**king Larry ... ' Rock 'n Roll . phew ...
When does this come out?
Loved it.

Many thanks to the Tampa for producing this video! This is the first time I've seen a real-life "Toto." In April 1992, the Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto CA ran Casablanca with possibly the same newsreel, with FDR in Morocco. The ~1200 seat theatre had or was near a full house. The Stanford used the changeover system with carbon arc lamphouses at the time.
After watching this video, this place has become a bucket list destination for me. If I'm ever passing through Tampa, I have to catch a silent movie. Also, do you guys still project movies on film, even if it's only on occasion? That's something that's increasingly rare nowadays. I think it's something that definitely adds to the experience of going to the movies. Especially if it's a silent film. I've seen the projection equipment in older videos of your theatre.
why was the projectors tilted that way
There projection booth is very high up in the theater. So it has to be pointed down like that so it points at the screen.
those are nice projectors my friend in georga has one
Nice video.
interesting!
God bless Bob!!
I just found this video. Mike's story and mine are so close. The first movie I ever threaded was "Scrooge" but I ran "See No Evil" when I was learning projection. I started working the projection rooms in 1972, too. I thoroughly enjoyed this video but saddened to hear of Mike's passing. RIP..
Amazing
Harold Lloyd and a Wurlitzer!! Oh yes! :)
Thanks brother from India
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for this.
Thank you for the opportunity to watch this in the comfort of my home. I can't wait for the doors of my favorite movie theatre to reopen and enjoy watching movies there.
Well done Tampa Theater. Well done.
Brilliant performance and a great innovation to use online technology to promote this greatest of all art forms! Bravo!!
Sweet . . . . . . thank you . . .
happiness is free
Lakeland, FL is where the Drive In theatre is.
I've lived in LA for 31 years now. I went to High School in Tampa and I visited Tampa Theatre and saw DOZENS of Classics and Concerts there every time I went there and visited. And while I lived there!! LOVE Tampa Theatre!! It's great to see this!!!!! I repeat: I LOOOOOOOOVE Tampa Theatre!!!!
this is real cinema, digital is for loosers.
I'm the composer of this score: bravo! A great excerpt from the film - the hits are right on. Great work by conductor David Stech and the Florida Orchestra!
Very informative documentary how gut's of Cinema works.Thank you.
Hopefully we'll have an easier time getting in and out of seats. The old ones were so close together!
More leg room is one of the prime reasons for the reseating! (Along with more comfortable cushions, cupholders, and a return to the 1926 style and colors.)
I can't wait to try the new seats.
Platters damage valuable film prints, not by system itself, but by imposed lack of operator attention. So good part today, if you still run film, it's all classic and hard to replace stuff. So it must be run reel to reel by skilled personal.
American friends, come and see the restoration of a 35 mm charlin French brand. ua-cam.com/video/Ztep7F7GGwk/v-deo.html
hi good to see cinematographic projector after a 16 years gap i was an cinematograph operator in indian about 16 years non stop for single screen cienam hall , i experienced to operate Brand PHOTOPONE , STRONG MOGHUL , AND BAUER PROJECTORS THANKS
Huge tilt...shooting over balconies? Would like a tour if possible, I come to Tampa often to service the IMAX dome at the MOSI. Last time I projected was Interstellar in 70mm IMAX for 3 weeks in CA. Thanks for posting! Send me a msg if a tour is possible.... 😀
Já trabalhei com um desses a uns 35 anos atrás
too bad most of the amcs have gone digital with the exception of a few that have acquired 70mm projectors for hateful eight
+Justin Fencsak That can't be true, because I saw The Force Awakens in 70mm IMAX.
+Marla Wallis ok
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. My dad was a projectionist too and I used to hang out every week in his 'box' (projection booth). Glad to see the shine in your eyes when you talk about your job. Great man.
I own 3 rca 400 16mm monsters and i am hoping to run 2 at a time somewhere in my county or close by my county - i own quite a few great movies ie: grease - wizard of oz - saturday night fever - "10" - modern problems (x2) and some cool old ones from the 50s plus like 300 episodes of various tv shows. I have the capability to run the 2 projectors (and 1 as a backup) into a mixer and out to my 6000 watts of powered speakers - cant wait to find a venue to keep this tradition alive :)
That's one hell of a rake you have in that cinema!!
Awesome
I am in the same exact shoes !!!!!!!!!!! I was 11
ok weird
I started threading and running the projection booth at the Sevon at 11! Wonderful video
Rui, I'm sorry to say that Mike passed away in October of 2010. He was an amazing guy and LOVED working in theatres. Check him out in the Beverly Drive in clip on UA-cam. He was a great friend and is very much missed. Keep projecting Rui!
That's quite a projection rake. Is the screen raked too? Single reels is indeed the only proper way to show a film (preferably with carbon arcs). From my point of view, all prints should be properly inspected between every screening, for which platters are not designed! Many thanks!
"Digital Cinema" is an oxymoron. Always will be.
